Mental health has always been important. However, during this pandemic mental health is easily overlooked. As you prioritize working from home, taking care of your children and keeping the house and meals organized, mental health ends up at the bottom of the list or not on the list at all. Here are a few small ways to implement self-care at home.
Take mini mental health breaks
If your schedule is particularly hectic, as most peoples are, then implement little mini mental health breaks. These are five-minute breaks that you give yourself throughout the day. You can use this time to sit outside, take a short walk, or even mediate. Whatever you do with it, it should exclude screens, work and people. This is your personal time just for you. You should put these five-minute breaks into your day at consistent time intervals. So, for example, every two hours you take five minutes.
Exercising doesn’t have to be strenuous. The goal is to increase your heart rate and release endorphins. Try yoga, meditation or even Pilates. Take a short or long walk in your neighborhood or take your dog for a walk. Anything to get the body moving will help to clear your mind. It’s a great way to implement self-care so get the whole family involved!
Set a purposeful bed-time routine
Staying at home has likely messed up your bed-time schedule. Right now, you need to be purposeful about when and how you go to sleep. Start with setting a time you get into bed. You don’t have to go to sleep right away. In fact, you shouldn’t. Instead, take some time to wind down through light reading, meditation, conversation or writing. Keep away from screens such as your phone or TV, and definitely keep away from work! Not only will this help to ease your mind and body, you will fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly.
Likely you’ve heard of everything we’ve mentioned here. In fact, you may have already implemented some or all of it. Either way, make sure you are making self-care a priority during this time too.
