Google Calendar (Tutorial Series #1): First Steps to Integrate Google Calendar

This tutorial is part of our "Sending Reminders Through Google Calendar" tutorial series. #

In this tutorial I will walk you through the first steps of Google Calendar integration.

We will cover:

  • Linking a Google Calendar
  • Setting up a Reminder Type

Step 1 : Linking a Google Calendar #

  • We have a detailed tutorial on linking your Google Calendar so I am not going to spend a lot of time on this part. If you need more info on that, the tutorial can be found here:

Tutorial : Linking a Google Calendar

For this tutorial I will simply run through the steps fairly quickly.

In order to use Google Calendar to send reminders, you will need to have a personal account or higher. Google Calendars are not available in express accounts.

  • Once you have created your account, navigate to the Google Calendars page by hovering over the navigation menu and then selecting “My Data Sources –> Google Calendars”.
  • Click on “Link a Google Calendar”.
  • Now I will open a new tab and go to my Google Calendars.
  •  I am going to click on the 3 dots next to the calendar I want to share.
  • Then I’ll click on “Settings and Sharing”.
  • I’m going to share this calendar with arcalendarshare@gmail.com and give permissions to “Make changes to events”. This will allow appointmentreminders.com to write back to the calendar. If we don’t want to write back to the calendar we can set the permissions as “See all event details”.
  • Now I will scroll down and grab the Calendar ID.
  • Now I’ll click back on my account and enter some info.
    • For calendar name I’ll just enter a friendly name
    • For Calendar ID, I’ll paste the calendar ID from Google.
    • I’ll leave everything else default for now other than changing some color preferences.
    • Then I’ll click on “Save and Relink Calendar”.

Step 2 : Create a Reminder Type #

Since we have other tutorials on creating reminder types, I will run through this again rather quickly.

If you need help on Reminder Types, you can find it here.

  • To get to the Reminder Types page, hover over the navigation menu and select “Reminder Settings, General Reminder Settings, Reminder Types / Templates”.
  • I’ll click on “Create a New Reminder Type”.
  • I will leave everything as default other than changing the Name.
  • You can see the sample text in the screen below.
  • I wont get into it here but you can easily customize the settings and the content of this Reminder Type by clicking on either the “Settings” or “Content” buttons.
  • You can also send a “Test” reminder to yourself by clicking on “Test”.
