Custom Pronunciation Settings for Automated Calls #
To improve the clarity and accuracy of your automated phone reminders, AppointmentReminders.com now includes a new Custom Pronunciation Settings section. This feature allows you to define exactly how specific words, abbreviations, numbers, or names should be pronounced during automated voice calls.
This is especially useful for:
Medical terminology
Abbreviations (e.g., “appt” for “appointment”)
Numbers (e.g., “123” as “one two three” instead of “one hundred twenty-three”)
Names with uncommon or unique pronunciations (e.g., “Dr Johannesburg” as “doctor jo-hannis-berg”)
How It Works #
You can specify a list of words or phrases used in your reminders—whether from standard reminder templates or dynamically inserted custom fields—and set a corresponding phonetic pronunciation.
When an automated call is placed, the system will use your specified pronunciation instead of the default text-to-speech rendering.
Examples #
| Text in Reminder | Pronounced As | Description |
|---|---|---|
| appt | appointment | Converts common abbreviation to full word |
| 123 | one two three | Reads digits individually instead of numerically |
| Dr Johannesburg | doctor jo-hannis-berg | Defines custom phonetic pronunciation for a name |
| Rx | prescription | Replaces medical abbreviation with spoken word |
| 9am | nine A M | Controls pronunciation of times |
Where to Use Custom Pronunciations #
You can apply custom pronunciation rules in:
Reminder Templates – Update templates to standardize pronunciation across all calls.
Custom Fields – Set pronunciation for dynamically inserted data such as patient names, times, or locations.
Reminder Types – Assign pronunciation rules per reminder type for even more control.
How to Add or Edit Pronunciations #
To get to the Call Pronunciation Screen, Hover over the Navigation Menu and Select
Reminder Settings –> Call Reminder Settings –> Call Pronunciations
From this screen, you can add a new record or edit or delete records.
The “Original Text” is the text content that will be replaced and the “Call Text” is the way it will be pronounced in the call.
Try experimenting with different values to see how it sounds in the calls!
